England won the first ODI comprehensively by 89 runs in Chester-le-Street. This was Sri Lanka’s fourth defeat in a row on their tour of the United Kingdom as they had been whitewashed in the preceding T20I series. Not many would have given Sri Lanka a chance to fight back and level the series in Leeds. However, they managed to do so on the back of a magnificent century from captain Kusal Mendis.
Sri Lanka amassed 321/6 in 50 overs before restricting the strong England batting line-up for just 305/9, winning the match by 16 runs. This set things up nicely for the third and final ODI, which would decide the fate of the series.
