According to the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Nigar Sultana Joty will continue to captain the ODI team on their upcoming tour to Australia. Following Joty’s decision to retire as T20 International captain midway through the Asian Games, there was speculation that the board might pick a new captain. During the tour, Bangladesh will play three one-day internationals against Australia.

On Monday, September 28, 2026, BCB president Tamim Iqbal and women’s wing chairman Rafiqul Islam Babu met with female cricket players at the BCB headquarters to discuss the captaincy issue and other concerns affecting the squad. Rafiqul Islam Babu made the formal announcement concerning Nigar Sultana’s future role at this gathering.

“I announced it today (during the meeting) that ‘you (Joty) are remaining as captain and will go to Australia as captain’,” Rafiqul said, according to Cricbuzz.

The board responds to the coach’s recent comments.

Nigar Sultana’s appointment as captain coincides with the Bangladesh women’s team’s recent uneven performance.

Earlier in 2026, the team were undefeated in World Cup qualifying, but they lost 2-1 at home to Sri Lanka, had mixed results in a Scotland-Netherlands tri-series, and won only two of their five World Cup matches.

“Our coach made some inappropriate remarks that nobody wanted to hear. I believe he went above the code of conduct when he made those remarks. Because he is under contract with the BCB, he cannot make such statements. “He has already said it, which is very unfortunate,” Babu observed.

“We have not yet issued a show-cause notice. He is a veteran coach, and we were not expecting this from him. He is one of the cricket board’s senior coaches. So we didn’t expect this from him. “I told the media that he made a serious mistake,” he concluded.

In one-day international cricket, Nigar Sultana has frequently performed well for Bangladesh. In 68 games, she has scored 1,585 runs with a strike rate of 56.57 and an average of 27.81. Her highest score was 101, and she had nine fifties and one hundred.
