In the other series India crushed Afghanistan by a massive 7 wickets on their home soil in 1st T20I in Delhi. After Azmatullah Omarzai’s 64 off 73, Afghanistan scored 156 for 8 but India chased it down with ease to score159 for 3 in just19.4 overs.
There were impressive returns for Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy from injury, an important contribution with the ball from Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel. And Bumrah wasted no time in making an impact, dismissing Rahmanullah Gurbaz with only the second delivery of the match. Conceding five wides in his first over, he maintained an aggressive response sending down a ball that gasped and edged Gurbaz to slip.
Afghanistan, to begin with, appeared to pose some threat through Sediqullah Atal and captain Ibrahim Zadran. After hitting a six and a four off Bumrah, Afghanistan lost all momentum when Zadran was run out at the end of the fourth over. Atal was dismissed by Arshdeep, while Axar Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy came up with more breakthroughs. Call-back Varun Chakravarthy struck quickly, cleaning up Darwish Rasooli as Afghanistan dipped to 43 for 5 at the end of seventh over.
Afghanistan needed a rescue innings at that moment and Omarzai delivered for them. He rebuilt the innings with Mohammad Nabi after a top-order collapse. Eventually, Omarzai remained not out on 64 and attacked the final over from Shivam Dube, scoring 21 off it. Afghanistan moved to 156 for 8 with that late assault, but never looked like having enough on a good Delhi surface for batting.
Abhishek Sharma led India’s chase in style. The left-handed batsman hit form in his characteristic style after suffering from a string of low scores in his previous innings. From the word go, he went after Afghanistan bowlers and cleared the rope multiple times with big hits all around the ground.
Abhishek scored 82 in mere 32 balls, smashing boundaries and sixes at will. His assault on their bowlers completely altered the face of the chase and seized any serious pressure from India’s path.
There was also a 121-run second-wicket partnership, with Ishan Kishan playing an important role. Abhishek scored nearly all of the runs while Kishan chipped in with 42 off 33 before being dismissed trying to hit his own six. One of the very few Afghan bowlers to halt Indian might, Rashid Khan claimed two well-angled catches but Afghanistan simply could not stem the flow of runs.
India were able to chase it down with 6 overs and 7 wickets to spare. Abhishek’s explosive innings was the highlight as India got this opening match of the series in no time
