The BCCI announced India’s squad for the three-match ODI series against West Indies on September 16, 2026, and Auqib Nabi, a seamer from Jammu and Kashmir, received his first One-Day International call-up. The 29-year-old right-arm medium bowler was included in the squad as the majority of senior players were preparing to travel to Japan for the Asian Games 2026. On September 27, the series commences in Thiruvananthapuram.

Auqib Nabi selection was a result of his exceptional performance in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, during which he finished with 60 wickets at an average of 12.65 and was awarded the player of the tournament. Additionally, Delhi Capitals acquired him for Rs 8.40 crore during the 2026 IPL auction.

He was previously selected as an injury replacement for Jasprit Bumrah for India’s two-match Test series in Sri Lanka; however, he did not participate. Aakash Chopra, the former India batsman, conveyed apprehensions regarding Nabi’s capacity to meet the requirements of white-ball cricket.

Auqib Nabi is not expected to make his ODI debut, and he may be relegated to the bench for the duration of the series, despite his selection to the squad. The squad is comprised of three frontline pace options in Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, and Gurnoor Brar, as well as Nitish Kumar Reddy, a fast-bowling all-rounder, which restricts the newcomer’s opportunities. Chopra further elaborated on his apprehensions regarding Auqib Nabi capacity to succeed in the shorter format, particularly in terms of his bowling pace and ability to function across various phases of an innings.
