Wasim Jaffer, who used to bat for India, is very worried about Jaiswal’s plans to become a wicketkeeper. Jaffer brought up the competitive wicketkeeping scene in Indian cricket and asked Jaiswal if he has done enough to learn how to do this well.
Mumbai batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, 24, is looking into becoming a wicketkeeper to get ready for the 2026–2027 Ranji Trophy season. People took notice when Jaiswal kept wickets for almost ten overs during one of Mumbai’s practice games and shared videos from a simulated game on social media.
Jaiswal’s Mumbai teammate Siddhesh Lad explained why the batter did what he did. Lad says that Jaiswal wants to get better at this skill so that he can use it in the future. “He wants to eventually, in the future, keep wickets for maybe Mumbai or go on to keep wickets for the Indian team,” Lad says. Early this week, Mumbai captain Lad told reporters, “I feel that way, but I don’t have any clarity on that.”
And Wasim Jaffer was shocked by the wicketkeeper’s choice.
What worried Wasim Jaffer more in depth? He brought up the point that wicketkeeping is a skill that needs time to get better at. He told the left-handed batter to focus on his batting because he will have to open for India in the two-match Test series against New Zealand that starts next month.
It is well known that Jaiswal is on India’s Test team, but he doesn’t play much in T20Is and is only there to back up Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli in ODIs. Along with batting, Jaiswal has been practicing leg-spin at the Indian team nets. In a few games, he has rolled his arm over.

Mumbai will play Chandigarh in the first game of the Ranji Trophy on October 11 at Wankhede Stadium. Jaiswal will not be able to play in the second game because he has to be with his family in India.
