A noteworthy recent development is the appointment of Chaminda Vaas, a renowned Sri Lankan left-arm bowler, as a bowling mentor for the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL 2027. The announcement was made by DC through a social media video on their official account.
Since retiring from cricket in 2012, Chaminda Vaas, one of Sri Lanka’s most successful new ball bowlers, has participated in 439 international matches in various formats.
Chaminda Vaas’ appointment as a fast-bowling coach by the cricket team is noteworthy. This suggests that in order to lead the team’s pace bowling unit, he will only work with players such as Mitchell Starc, Lungi Ngidi, Mukesh Kumar, Auqib Nabi, and Dushmantha Chameera.
It is worth noting that Vaas has obtained a professional coaching qualification and is a Level 3 trained cricket coach. His areas of expertise encompass tactical bowling, high-performance training, youth academy structures, and left-arm seam/swing mechanics.
He has been an elite consultant for New Zealand and Ireland, in addition to having several stints with the Sri Lankan Senior Men’s Team, in terms of his expertise as a bowling coach.
Vaas’s cricket career serves as additional evidence of his reputation as a bowler. Throughout his all-format cricket career, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, two of India’s greatest players, have been his adversaries. He has dismissed them separately on six occasions and on twelve occasions.
Chaminda Vaas has accumulated 400 ODI wickets and 355 Test wickets. In the 50-over format, his most impressive figures are 8 for 19. He bowled for the Deccan Chargers in the IPL from 2007 to 2010, capturing 18 wickets in 13 innings. His most impressive IPL statistics were an average of 19.72 and a strike rate of 3/21.
Chaminda Vaas’ extensive coaching experience
Chaminda Vaas’s coaching background includes the management of young coaching networks in Colombo and Jaffna to identify, cultivate, and train elite athletes. He also served as the head coach of the Jaffna Stallions Cricket Academy.
He acted as the academy lead and consultant coach for Sri Lanka Cricket from 2016 to 2021, providing methodical guidance to emerging players in the high-performance center.
Between October and November of 2012, he was the fast bowling coach for New Zealand Cricket. In 2016, he also briefly served as a bowling consultant for the Ireland cricket team.
He has been the chief bowling coach for the men’s national team of Sri Lanka since 2017. He was appointed as the head fast bowling coach for the West Indies national tour in 2021.
